The Best of Modern Indie

Modern indie music usually gets discarded as ‘recycled wannabe oasis bands’ which most certainly is not the case as a lot of current indie music is pretty incredible but it is not being appreciated as much as it should be as the majority of it is being washed away by the not so good current pop music which definitely is not as great as some of the records current indie artists are producing.

Declan McKenna

Declan McKenna is making it big in the current indie scene after releasing 6 singles over the past 3 years that have made him a big hit, a few of those singles include ‘Paracetamol’ ‘Humongous’ and ‘The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home’. McKenna is also a huge role model to young liberal teens, him being in the same position as most young people during this political time, uses his platform to share his views and encourage young people to do the same.

Declan McKenna’s debut album ‘What Do You Think About The Car?’ is set to debut July 21st.

Mac DeMarco

Are you even indie if you don’t listen to Mac DeMarco? Mac DeMarco’s sound is very recognisable… it’s different to most ‘typical’ indie music, this is purely down to the generally lazy atmosphere, which sounds like a bad thing which it most definitely is not as it gives off a great unique sound.

Mac DeMarco’s 8th studio album ‘This Old Dog’ was just released May 5th.

Catfish and the Bottlemen

In my opinion, I think Catfish and the Bottlemen are possibly one of the greatest bands to come out of the indie music scene. They have a pretty generic sound and don’t tend to be so spontaneous with their music, frontman Van McCann admitted to NME that the band don’t tend to think outside the box, in fact, they sit pretty comfortably right in the centre of the box. Which of course is not a bad thing, they are just reinventing the cool indie music of the 90’s and early 00’s.

Peace

‘In Love’ by Peace is one of my all time favourite albums ever. In early years the indie rock band were criticised by the likes of NME and The Guardian for being too alike to other indie bands such as Foals, The Maccabees and Vampire Weekend, times have now changed as Peace have now made frequent appearances with NME.

Blossoms

After the release of their debut single ‘Charlemagne’ was released, it had great commercial success after being played as Radio 1’s track of the day and it was featured on Spotify’s ‘spotlight on 2016’ playlist. This wasn’t the peak of success for the band, their debut album placed at number one on the UK album charts in August of 2016.
